How Due Dates and Ovulation Are Actually Calculated

A due date and an ovulation prediction answer two different questions using the same underlying idea: a menstrual cycle is fairly predictable in its later half, even when its earlier half is not. Here is the reasoning behind both.

The 280 day rule

The standard way to estimate a due date, conventionally attributed to 19th century German obstetrician Franz Naegele, adds 280 days, exactly 40 weeks, to the first day of your last menstrual period. That 280 days assumes a textbook 28 day cycle with ovulation occurring on day 14: roughly 266 days of actual pregnancy after conception, plus the 14 days before conception that gestational age still counts. If your average cycle runs longer or shorter than 28 days, the calculator adjusts the estimate by that same difference, since a longer cycle typically means ovulation, and therefore conception, happened later relative to the last period than the textbook assumption expects.

Why counting from the last period, not conception

This can seem backward at first. Pregnancy does not actually begin until conception, roughly two weeks after the last period in a 28 day cycle, so a pregnancy dated this way is described as "4 weeks" on the same day conception has only just happened. The convention exists for a practical reason: the first day of a last menstrual period is a specific, known date almost everyone can identify, while the exact date of conception usually is not, even for a couple actively trying to conceive, since it depends on exactly when ovulation and fertilization happened within a fertile window that spans several days. Dating from a known, rememberable reference point makes the convention usable in practice, even though it means "gestational age" and "time since conception" are never quite the same number.

Other ways to date the same pregnancy

When the actual conception date is known, for example from fertility tracking, the calculator can date the pregnancy from conception directly instead, adding 266 days rather than 280, since conception has already skipped past the 14 day estimate the last period method has to assume. An ultrasound measurement of gestational age on a known date works similarly in reverse: it subtracts the measured number of weeks and days from 280 to find how far back the equivalent last period date must have been, then proceeds from there. IVF pregnancies use their own variant, since an embryo transferred at day 3, 5, or 6 already has that many days of development behind it: the calculator adds 266 days from the transfer date, then subtracts the embryo's age at transfer, so it is not treated as if conception happened on transfer day itself.

How reliable is a due date

A due date is a statistical estimate of a range, not a prediction of a specific day, and it should be read that way. Only a small fraction of babies, commonly cited as around 1 in 20, actually arrive on their exact estimated due date. Birth anywhere from about 37 to 42 weeks of gestational age is generally considered full term and unremarkable, a five week window that reflects genuine, normal biological variation in pregnancy length, not measurement error in the formula.

Predicting ovulation: working backward from the next period

Ovulation prediction uses a different piece of the same underlying cycle. Rather than assuming ovulation always falls on day 14 and counting forward from the last period, the calendar method works backward from the predicted start of the next period instead. That is a deliberate choice: the luteal phase, the stretch of time from ovulation to the next period, is relatively fixed at about 14 days for most people, while the follicular phase before ovulation is the part that actually varies from cycle to cycle and from person to person. Counting backward 14 days from a predicted next period date tracks that stable half of the cycle, which makes it a more reliable anchor than counting forward a fixed number of days from a last period whose length can vary.

The fertile window

The fertile window is not just the day of ovulation. It typically begins about 5 days before predicted ovulation and extends 1 day after it. That range is not symmetric because sperm and egg do not survive equally long: sperm can remain viable in the reproductive tract for several days, while a released egg is typically viable for less than a day. Intercourse in the days before ovulation can still result in conception once the egg is released, which is why the window opens well before ovulation day but closes shortly after it.

The limits of calendar based prediction

Both calculations assume a cycle that behaves like its own recent average, and real cycles vary more than that assumption suggests, even for the same person from one month to the next. Stress, illness, travel, and normal biological variation can all shift ovulation earlier or later than the calendar predicts. For anyone trying to pinpoint ovulation more precisely than a calendar estimate allows, tracking basal body temperature (which rises slightly after ovulation) or using an ovulation predictor kit (which detects the hormone surge that triggers ovulation directly) both measure the body's actual signals rather than assuming average cycle timing.
