Body Fat Percentage Explained: The Navy Method and Its Limits

A body fat percentage sounds like it should require a lab, and the most accurate ways to get one do. But a tape measure and a formula can get surprisingly close, close enough that the US military has used a version of it for decades to decide who meets fitness standards. The Body Fat Calculator on this site uses that same formula. Here is what it actually measures, and where it falls short.

Where the formula came from

The circumference method used here is commonly called the Navy method, since the US Navy adopted a version of it in the early 1980s as a fast, no equipment alternative to hydrostatic (underwater) weighing for measuring recruits' body composition. Hydrostatic weighing is accurate, but it requires a special tank and full submersion, impractical for testing large numbers of people quickly. The Navy method instead uses a handful of circumference measurements, neck and waist for men, with hip added for women, run through a regression formula fitted to match hydrostatic weighing results across a large sample of people.

The formula itself

For men, the formula is 86.01 times the base 10 logarithm of (waist minus neck), minus 70.041 times the base 10 logarithm of height, plus 36.76. For women, it adds hip into the mix: 163.205 times the base 10 logarithm of (waist plus hip minus neck), minus 97.684 times the base 10 logarithm of height, minus 78.387. All measurements are in inches. These numbers are not derived from a clean geometric model of the body. They are regression coefficients, fitted statistically so the formula's output tracks hydrostatic weighing results as closely as possible across the original study's participants. That is worth knowing, because it means the formula works best for people who resemble that original sample, and gets less reliable the further someone's body shape drifts from it.

Why waist minus neck, and why women add hip

The core idea is that the difference between waist and neck circumference tracks how much tissue has built up around the midsection relative to a comparatively stable reference point higher on the body. Neck circumference changes very little with fat gain or loss, so it works as a rough baseline, and a larger waist to neck difference correlates with higher body fat. Men and women tend to store fat differently: men more centrally around the abdomen (sometimes called an android pattern), women more around the hips and thighs (a gynoid pattern), which is why the women's formula adds a hip measurement the men's formula does not need.

How accurate is it really

Compared to hydrostatic weighing or a DEXA scan, the gold standard for measuring body composition directly, the Navy method typically lands within about three to four percentage points for people with an average build. That margin widens for people at the extremes: very muscular athletes and people with a very high or very low body fat percentage tend to see larger errors, the same limitation the BMI Explained guide describes for BMI, a formula fitted to an average population applied to a body that is not average. Measurement technique also matters more than people expect. A waist measurement taken an inch higher or lower, or a tape pulled too tight or too loose, can shift the result by several percentage points, since the formula treats those measurements as if they were exact.

These bands come from the American Council on Exercise, the most commonly cited scale for this particular measurement. They are a general reference, not a medical diagnosis, the same distinction worth keeping in mind for any formula built from population averages rather than an individual scan.

Getting a consistent measurement

Since the formula is sensitive to measurement error, consistency matters more than precision to a fraction of an inch. Measure at the same time of day, ideally in the morning before eating, since bloating can shift waist measurements by half an inch or more. Keep the tape level and snug against the skin without compressing it, and measure the waist at the narrowest point, typically just above the belly button, rather than at the widest point of the hips. Tracking the same measurement points over time, even if the absolute number carries some error, gives a reasonably reliable trend, which for most people is more useful than a single precise reading.
